With fall here I am getting excited to start cooking those warmer comfort type foods like this American Chop Suey Recipe. There is something about fall and comfort. Why is that? Do you feel that way too?
I am always looking for quick weeknight meals on those busy nights! Thankfully American Chop Suey is one of my go-to meals on those busy days. I love that it reheats easily for those nights we aren’t able to eat all at the same time because of sports and other activities.
Not only that, but little kids love this meal, I think it is because of the elbow noodles! Maybe it reminds them of macaroni and cheese?! 🙂
American Chop Suey is mostly known in New England, but people throughout the whole United States know what it is, they just call it different things.
American Chop Suey is similar to American Goulash and chili mac. It is a tomato-based pasta dish that usually has ground beef and different spices to add different flavors. American Chop Suey screams comfort food.

American Chop Suey Recipe
Serves: 8-10 people
Prep time: 8 minutes
Cook time: 25 minutes
American Chop Suey Ingredients
1 pound ground beef (or ground turkey)
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 large onion chopped, (white or yellow onion)
1 green pepper, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon pepper
1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon chopped parsley
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 14.5 ounces can diced tomatoes, not drained
1 pound elbow macaroni
Instructions for American Chop Suey:
Before you begin, you will want to bring a big pot of water to boil. Once the water is boiling prepare the macaroni as directed on the label. Be sure you cook it for al dente because you don’t want to overcook it. Once it is cooked drain it.
While the noodles are boiling heat a large frying pan on medium. Add the olive oil and ground beef. You can also use ground turkey if you would like also. I love using this mix and chop for breaking up ground beef! You will want to cook it for about 3 minutes. It is okay if some of the meat is still pink. Drain off the grease.
Next add onions, green pepper, and garlic to the meat. You will want to stir this every few minutes. This should take 5-6 minutes to make the vegetable tender.
Add the oregano, basil, parsley, You can use a basic Italian seasoning blend in place of the dried oregano, basil, and parsley if you would like.
Add the salt and Worcestershire sauce. The Worcestershire sauce adds a real nice, smoky depth in the background. You can add more or less to taste.
Continue to saute for 2-3 minutes.
Next, add tomatoes with juice. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 10 minutes.
Add cooked and drained pasta to the American Chop Suey sauce. Gently toss them together.
Cover and simmer the American Chop Suey Recipe for 2-3 minutes.
Once it is cooked ladle into warm bowls and enjoy! American Chop Suey is great reheated and freezes well, so it is perfect to have on those busy nights as leftovers or pulling out of the freezer on those busy days!
