Baby Led Weaning Finger Foods
When I started giving my baby solids I was always a little hesitant about what I should be feeding them. I wanted to do baby led weaning because I knew the benefits of BLW, but I just didn’t know what would make great baby led weaning finger foods.
I quickly learned that there were so many great baby led weaning finger foods that the possibilities are endless when it comes to feeding your baby.
There’s a couple things to keep in mind when preparing finger food for your little one:
Always make sure the BLW finger food you give your baby is the right size.
Cut the food into strips that are big enough for your baby to fit in his hand with enough sticking out for him to chew on. You want to make sure that you don’t cut the food too small and make it a possible choking hazard for your baby.
Another thing to keep in mind when you’re choosing baby weaning finger foods is to try to offer them baby led weaning finger foods that are healthy and packed full of good nutrients.
Protein baby led weaning finger foods
Scrambled Egg: Scrambled eggs are perfect baby weaning finger foods. They’re packed full of protein and minerals that are so good for your baby. Let the eggs cook in the pan, then flip them so you can easily cut them into strips for baby to hold.
Meatballs: Use ground beef or ground turkey to make meatballs big enough for your baby to hold. This is one of the best baby led weaning finger foods to get protein and iron into your baby’s growing body!
Chicken or Beef: Cut chicken or beef into strips. They will get a good amount of protein and iron as they gnaw on the meat!
Toast fingers: Toast fingers are such good baby weaning finger food because you can add different spreads on top to give flavor and lots of protein! I love adding almond butter, peanut butter or hummus for a protein-packed snack I’m sure your baby is going to love!
Cheese: Cheese is a great source of protein and calcium. Slice the cheese into strips so your baby can easily hold it in his hand.
Vegetable BLW finger foods
Cooked Broccoli: Steam broccoli for 5-10 minutes, until a fork easily goes through. Give baby a floret that’s big enough for them to hold. Broccoli is rich in vitamin C which will actually help their body absorb iron!
Cooked Carrots: Cooked carrots are a great BLW finger food. Steam carrots for 5-10 minutes or until soft. It’s a good idea to use the longer carrots instead of baby carrots since baby carrots aren’t quite long enough for them to hold and eat. Cut the steamed carrots into strips and give to baby for a yummy snack full of vitamin A. A BLW Tip, cut your carrots before cooking that way they don’t fall apart while cutting.
Sweet potatoes: Sweet potatoes are full of fiber, vitamins and minerals. They are such a good option for baby led weaning finger foods. Cut the sweet potato into finger-like strips, and roast until soft but still firm enough for baby to hold on to.
Butternut Squash: Butternut squash is also full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants! I like to cut the squash into spears and steam for 10 minutes or until soft.
Great baby led weaning finger foods- fruits
Banana: Bananas make a great BLW finger food. Cut the banana in half and take the banana peel back about 2 or three inches with a knife, leaving the rest of the peel for baby to hold onto.
Watermelon: Watermelon is also a great option. Cut the watermelon into strips big enough for baby to hold onto. Put the watermelon strips in the fridge and serve them cold to give your baby a refreshing snack.
Watermelon is a perfect weaning finger food for when baby is teething and needs some cool relief! This is one of those baby led weaning finger foods your baby won’t be able to get enough of!
Berries: Berries are also really great baby weaning finger foods. Berries are packed full of antioxidants and are a great healthy option for your baby. When you serve berries, be sure to cut them in half!
Avocado: Avocados are a great way for your baby to get the vitamins she needs. They are packed full of several different vitamins and omega-3’s! Avocados are the perfect baby weaning finger foods for your baby!
Mangos: Mangos are BLW finger foods that are full of vitamin A, which helps your little one’s eyes and skin stay healthy and strong! Slice them into strips and roll them in almond flour or flax seed to give baby a little extra grip.
Oranges: I love giving my kids oranges because they’re high in Vitamin C and help keep the immune system healthy! Cut oranges into wedges, leaving the skin on for easy grip.
Weaning Finger Food Recipes
Zucchini Bites: These little bites are super easy to make and are a great way to serve veggies to your baby. These are the two things I’m always looking for in a recipe for my kids!
Apple, banana and carrot muffins: These muffins are the perfect baby weaning finger food because they don’t have any added sugar or salt and are packed full of healthy goodness. I just know your baby is going to love these.
Cauliflower Tots: These little tots are full of cauliflower, carrots, onions and peppers. These weaning finger foods are a great way to get your baby used to flavor and veggies!
Flourless pancakes: For these pancakes, whisk together one medium sized mashed banana with 2 eggs. Pour the mixture into a hot pan and cook for about one minute, flip the pancake and cook for an additional minute. Once it’s done, cut the pancake into strips and see how much your baby loves this baby weaning finger food!
Cheesy Broccoli Bites: These cheesy broccoli bites are loaded with broccoli and also have eggs and cheese for a good boost of protein. If your baby doesn’t like plain broccoli, they might like it prepared this way! And if they love plain broccoli, then you know they will love these baby weaning finger foods!
