How to Save Money with These Back to School Shopping Tips
Do you get the same feeling of dread I get when you hear about Back to School? Don’t get me wrong. I get super excited about getting the kids back to school and getting into a routine again, but I don’t particularly enjoy doing all of the shopping that needs to happen.
It seems that those school supplies lists get longer and longer each year. Again, I’m not whining or feeling annoyed by the amount that is there. I love supporting my children’s’ education. It just takes a lot of effort on my end to keep everything straight! There is also a lot to do with preparing clothing and backpacks and lunchboxes. I have discovered these Back to School shopping tips to keep my sanity every year.
Figure out what you already have in your house! Search and dig through those drawers in the office. You might be surprised at the number of things you already have from the school supplies list for your child to use. Save some money and reuse pencil boxes, backpacks, and erasers that are just sitting around the house. Don’t buy new things if you don’t have to!
It’s not just school supplies we have to prepare for. Our kids also need clothes to wear to school. Getting a good deal on shorts and shirts from summer that your kids can wear to school into late Fall is a great way to save some money!
Even at a young age involve the kids in picking stuff out. Let them pick out some shirts that they like. Let them pick out a backpack they like. Involving kids in shopping allows them to feel good about their purchases. When kids get older set aside a budget for them. Allow them to spend it how they would like with direction given. If you give them $200.00 let them know they need to buy with it. This allows them the opportunity to manage their money and figure out what is a priority for them. They can pick out what they like, within their budget. Setting limits helps kids understand and figure out what they really want or need.

Host a Shop and Swap
One of my favorite me time gatherings to go to are swap parties. This is where everyone brings things they don’t want or use and each person can “shop” from other peoples stash. So get together with some other moms with kids and make the trades. You can get some great stuff, including clothes!
Buy the Basics in Bulk
Each and every school classroom is different, but a lot of what is requested can be purchased in bulk to save money. That way you can use it for several years and save! My best purchase in buying school supplies in bulk has been pencils and glue sticks! We never run out and we always have spare boxes on hand to send to school at the beginning of each new school year.
Stick to the School Supplies List!
It is really easy to get caught up in good deals and sale prices for Back to School. One of the best back to school shopping tips is: stick to the school supplies shopping list! Only buy what the teacher puts on the list. After all, they are the ones that know what they need and what will be used and what will get shoved the back of kids desks. There are lots of cute items that might look fun but aren’t really useful. Don’t get caught up in the knickknack trap!
