I am always on the search for the best products for kids! A few weeks I shared with you the best puzzles for 2 year olds and the best water tables for kids and you all loved it! So, I decided to share with you today the best books for 2 year olds. These books are some of our absolute favorites in our home and ones you will want to add to your reading collection as well.
What to Look for in Books for 2 years Olds
There is no hard-fast rule as to what to look for when picking books for your two year olds. I try to find books that
- Have lots of colors
- Simple illustrations
- Keep them entertained and engaged
- We try to have some educational books that teach colors or letters or a skill
- Rhyming or repetitive phrases. This helps kids learn to memorize and participate in the storytelling.
- Books that are not loaded with tons of words on the page
- Great Bedtime books
- Most importantly, choose age appropriate books. Simple Stories to follow, short, easy to understand, and interactive if possible.
Can 2 year olds read?
A common question asked among moms and dads is, “Can 2 year olds read?” The answer is no.
You might find your child retelling the story or even “reading it to you” but this is through memorization.
Your toddler might be beginning to learn the alphabet, but not quite recognizing words. If you would like to encourage reading a great technique is to point at each word as you read so they can follow along.

This is an all-time favorite book of mine to read to my kids. Moo, Baa, La La La takes basic animal sounds and brings silliness to your reading time together. I promise it is sure to entertain your kids. Also warning you now you will be reciting this book for years to come!
