It’s no secret that motherhood is a fulltime position that never stops! I’m always looking for mom hacks that make my life easier and simplify daily tasks like laundry, dinner and keeping the house tidy.
But part of being a mom is making sure we take time for ourselves, right? Sometimes it seems like we literally can’t get one second to ourselves.
That’s why this blueberry mug cake is a favorite of mine! If I’m craving something sweet after the kids go to bed, I can make just one serving instead of a whole entire cake. And it’s actually pretty healthy.
Don’t we all deserve a reward for getting our kids in bed? I sure think so!
I don’t just make this as a guilty pleasure though. This blueberry muffin in a mug also a favorite quick breakfast my boys like to make before school. It literally only takes 7 minutes to put it all together!

Ingredients for Blueberry Muffin in a Mug
¼ cup ricotta cheese
2 tablespoons butter, melted
½ teaspoon vanilla
3 tablespoons liquid honey or maple syrup
¼ cup flour
¼ teaspoon baking powder
Pinch of salt
1/3 cup blueberries
Powdered sugar for dusting

How to Make Blueberry Muffin in a Mug
In a small, microwave-safe glass bowl or a large mug, whisk together the ricotta cheese, butter, honey/syrup, vanilla, and egg.
Whisk in the flour, baking powder, and salt until combined.
Top with the blueberries.
Microwave on high for 3 minutes.
Remove from microwave and dust with powdered sugar. Be careful removing as the glass/mug will be hot! Let cool 3-5 minutes before eating.
Tips and Tricks for Blueberry Mug Cake
- Soften your butter before starting the recipe. This will make it easier to whisk and help the texture of the cake in the end!
- Use a bigger mug the first time you make this recipe. You don’t want your cake to bubble up and run over!
- If you want to avoid having your cake stick to the mug, mix the ingredients in a separate bowl and grease your cup/microwave-safe bowl. Then, when you’re ready to cook, add your mixture to the greased cup and cook.
Should I use fresh or frozen blueberries in this blueberry muffin in a mug recipe?
For this recipe, you can use either fresh or frozen blueberries. Both work just fine. If you use fresh blueberries, be aware that they will be super hot when they come out of the microwave! The frozen blueberries will be cooked all the way through, but they won’t be as hot.

Even though this recipe is called Blueberry Mug Cake, you don’t have to use blueberries! You can really get creative with what you add here. You can definitely substitute blueberries for strawberries, peaches, apples, or raspberries. Just remember that this recipe does have ricotta cheese, so you might want to choose a fruit that would pair well with that.
What can I add to this blueberry in a mug recipe?
There are so many different things you can add to your blueberry muffin in a mug. You can spice your recipe up by adding greek yogurt to the top (this also cools your blueberry mug cake down considerably!), you can also top with Nutella, cinnamon, or granulated sugar. You can even try different fruit if you don’t have blueberries on hand.
If you are craving something chocolatey you can add or replace the blueberries with chocolate chips or cocoa powder.
What watt microwave is best for blueberry mug cake?
Each microwave is different depending on how old they are or the watts they have. This recipe calls for 3 minutes in the microwave, but if you have a higher wattage microwave or you know your microwave cooks things fast, don’t be afraid to only cook for 1 ½ to 2 minutes. Then put a knife or a toothpick in the middle to test if it’s done. If it is not done, continue cooking in 30-second increments.
You don’t want to overcook it. It will become tough and rubbery. Soft, moist blueberry mug cake is the goal!

This is a really easy recipe to make gluten-free! All you have to do is substitute the flour for a gluten-free flour option and it should work just fine.

It’s totally ok if you don’t have room temperature butter available for this blueberry mug cake. You can simply put it in the microwave at lower power for 20-second increments. Keep an eye on it though! You don’t want it to melt.

No worries! You don’t have to use a mug for this blueberry mug cake. You can use a small microwave-safe bowl too. A mug is just nice because it has a handle. I use little pyrex ingredient bowls for this all the time!
