How to Make this Crock Pot Cheesy Ranch Potatoes Recipe
These delicious cheesy ranch potatoes take almost no time to prepare. They’ll be the perfect side for a busy family meal!
The first thing you want to do is grease your slow cooker with some cooking spray. This recipe gets pretty cheesy, so you don’t want it sticking to your slow cooker.
Next, add your chopped potatoes directly to the slow cooker. You’ll want to chop your potatoes into ½ inch pieces before doing this!
Season your potatoes with salt, pepper, and paprika and stir to make sure that the potatoes are covered.
In a separate small bowl, combine the ranch dressing and sour cream with a whisk. Pour the mixture over the potatoes and add the shredded cheese. Give the potatoes another quick toss to coat and put your lid on your slow cooker.
Let your slow cooker cheesy ranch potatoes cook on low for 4-5 hours or high for 3 hours or until the potatoes are tender.
While the potatoes cook, cook your chopped bacon to your liking. I like to give my chopped bacon a quick fry on the stove top until they’re cooked through.
When your potatoes are ready, serve by topping with the chopped bacon.
And that’s it! Delicious slow cooker cheesy ranch potatoes with hardly any prep!
Tips and tricks for Slow Cooker Cheesy Ranch Potatoes
- To add a fresh take to this recipe, chop up some fresh chives and top the potatoes with a handful before serving. They’ll also add some great color if you’re looking to dress these up!
- You can use whatever potatoes that you have on hand, but my favorite is red potatoes for this recipe. All potatoes have different starch content which changes the texture and flavor and I think the creamy red potatoes pair so great with the cheesy ranch taste!
- Don’t skip greasing your slow cooker! I have left out this step before in recipes and I always regret it when I have to scrub my pan! Especially with recipes that don’t have added liquid, make sure your crock pot is nice and greased to prevent sticking.
- If you don’t have cooking spray, or if you want to try an even easier-to-clean option, try out a pot liner. If you haven’t used a pot liner before in your slow cookers, you are missing out. They make cleaning up so much faster and easier! These liners are my favorites!
Can I use a dry ranch packet instead of regular ranch dressing?
You sure can! I love keeping a packet or two of dry ranch in my pantry because they come in handy.
If you want to use a dry ranch packet in place of bottled ranch dressing, just make sure you make it according to the package directions so that your recipe has enough moisture. Usually, you just need to add mayo, so you can add it right to your sour cream mixture!
What should I serve these cheesy ranch potatoes with?
I could just eat these yummy potatoes right on their own, but it would be a great side dish for many of your family’s favorite meals.
The most traditional main dish to serve with slow cooker cheesy ranch potatoes is some sort of meat or protein. I could see this being great with a roast, or barbecue chicken. It would be really good with burgers too!
Honestly, I don’t think you can go wrong with any choice, but you may want to stay away from pairing slow cooker cheesy ranch potatoes with pasta or other starchy foods.
What kind of cheddar cheese should I use with this recipe?
My personal favorite cheese to use with this recipe is a nice sharp cheddar. Sharp cheddar cheese has more of a strong rich cheese flavor which tends to pair well with potatoes. It also can hold up to the strong ranch flavor and gives this a good balance.
However, you can do whatever your family likes! If you want to tone down the cheesy flavor, use a medium or mild cheese instead.
You could even mix in a Colby cheese, Swiss, or any other family favorite. I could see a nice pepper jack being great if your kids can handle a little spice.
How do I know when my slow cooker cheesy ranch potatoes are ready?
You don’t want the potatoes to get too mushy, but you definitely want them to be creamy and fully cooked so be patient and make sure they are cooked through!
The easiest way to test your potatoes is to poke them with a fork. Your fork should be able to glide right through the potato without any resistance. You could even pull a potato out and let it cool so you can do a quick taste test if you want to be sure!
