How to make a Rae Dunn Rolling Pin

Painting Your Rolling Pin

This DIY Rae Dunn Inspired rolling pin is the perfect gift to give this holiday season. It’s a simple cricut project perfect for the novice to advanced.

To begin making your Rae Dunn rolling pin you will want to start by taping around the handles of the rolling pin. This will help keep unwanted paint off them. I am a fan of the raw handles, but of course you can paint yours!

Next, you will want to hold the rolling pin at a vertical and use your sponge brush and paint down. You will want to use a generous amount of paint to cover the rolling pin. Be sure that you use the brush to get in the edges of the roller near the handles.

Be sure you are using either a chalk paint or a matte paint. Chalk paint is thicker which will help add better coverage to the Rae Dunn Rolling pin.

You will want to use 2-3 coats of paint. Be sure to let the paint dry really well in between coats of paint. If you want to speed up the drying process you can use a hair dryer to help dry it faster.

Vinyl for Rae Dunn Rolling Pin

While your DIY Rae Dunn rolling pin is drying you can begin working on your vinyl.

You will want to download and import the Rae Dunn Inspired Fonts into the design program. You can choose between Skinny Font and Cami Rae.

For this project I am using Cami Rae.

Once the font has been uploaded into the design program then you will type in the words or phrases that you want to put on your rolling pin.

Since these are for Christmas I wanted to use holiday themed, “Cookies, Frosty, Santa etc.”

I have also seen cute ones that say gather, celebrate, roll it… Anything you decide will be perfect!

You will want to measure your phrases for this project to be 1.9 inches in height. The width will vary based on your word/ phrase you select.

The rolling pin I am using from Walmart is full sized and about 2 inches thick. If your rolling pin is smaller or larger you will want to adjust the height according to how thick your rolling pin is.

Once you get the word/ phrase all set up you will want to align and press the vinyl on the light blue grip mat. Once you get it aligned, load it into the machine.

Align and press the vinyl onto the light, blue grip mat and load into the machine.

Be sure to adjust the material dial before cutting.

Removing the Vinyl

Once your word or phrase has been cut you will want to unload the mat and remove the cut vinyl.

You will want to remove the vinyl using the weeding tool. If you forget which one that is, it is the one that looks like the dreaded dentist pick.

You will want to use this weeding tool to weed around the letters and along the spaces and within the letters, like inside the “O”.

Next, you will want to measure and cut enough transfer paper to cover the cut vinyl. You will want to very carefully apply it to the top of the cut weeded vinyl.

Then apply pressure with the scraper tool, if you can’t find your scraper tool an old gift card will do.

To apply pressure you will want to go over the vinyl applying pressure to push out any of the tiny air bubbles. This also helps it stick to the transfer paper.

Once it is good and stuck, flip the vinyl with the transfer paper attached. This means the vinyl should be letters done.

Then oh so carefully and slowly roll the plastic backing off the vinyl leaving the cut vinyl letters on the transfer paper. The letters should be the only thing left on the transfer paper. You will know you did this right if you can see through the transfer paper.

Sticking the vinyl onto your rolling pin

You will then want to line up the transfer tape that has the vinyl on it with your rolling pin. On this particular DIY Rae Dunn Inspired Rolling Pin I applied it on the left side about a quarter of an inch from the edge.

This was my preference, of course you can install it on the right side or in the middle, it is completely up to you.

If you are happy with the placement of your word. phrase, then use your scraper tool to gently smooth the vinyl by applying medium pressure to the vinyl. This will transfer the vinyl onto the rolling pin.

After you have smoothed it and applied enough pressure, then very slowly roll the transfer paper away by applying pressure and pulling it down off the pin. As you are doing this the vinyl will adhere to the rolling pin.

If you find the vinyl is lifting up that means you did not apply enough pressure, so lay the transfer paper back down on top of it and then apply more pressure with the scraper.

Once the vinyl is down, use your fingers to press down on the vinyl to make sure that it is good and stuck to the rolling pin.

Then cut about 10-12 inches of ribbon of your choice, and tie the ribbon around the width of the pin. I like to use wired ribbon for this so I can manipulate it a bit.
