10 Expert Tips on Making Your Bathroom Not Stink

Add Vinegar in the tank

Sometimes your bathroom smell is not coming from the actual toilet bowl. It might be coming from the tank itself.

What you will want to do is add a cup of vinegar to the back of the tank and let it sit for 15 minutes before flushing. This will help alleviate the smell from the tank.

Make a DIY Bathroom Paste

Bathroom cleaners sometimes just don’t cut it! I have found that this DIY bathroom paste helps clean, fresh, and fight the odors that we all hate.
To make your DIY Bathroom paste you will need
– 2 ½ cups of baking soda
– 1 ½ cups of vinegar
– 2 tsp of lemon juice
To make your DIY bathroom cleaner you will add your baking soda to a jar. Then slowly and I mean slowly because it will start a reaction start adding your vinegar. This will foam and get everywhere if you do it too quickly. While adding it, stir. You are making it the consistency of a paste. Once you have the desired consistency add your lemon juice and stir.
I typically make a big bunch of this cleaner and store it in an airtight jar.
Now that your paste is made, you will want to use this to clean your toilet. Take a small non-abrasive brush (one that one scratches the toilet) and really scrub the toilet to remove any stuck particles.

Once you have scrubbed it all, wipe it clean.

You might even want to use some dental floss to get in underneath where the tank sits. Plug your nose, because you might not like the smell of what comes out with it!

Remove the Seat

So often when cleaning the bathroom, we clean around the seat but don’t take the time to actually remove the seat. There are so many smelly particles lurking right around those toilet seat screws that removing them allows you to get them all off the toilet so you no longer have that smell you can’t figure out where it’s coming from.

Clean the Grout / Floor

If you have a tile floor you know that grout can trap lots of unwanted odors and smells. Use the bathroom cleaner paste to clean the floor around the toilet.

Grab a scrub brush and really scrub that grout to remove any unwanted smells and stuck on items.

Wash Rugs / shower curtains

If you have boys, especially boys that are potty training you know that aiming is an afterthought. So, you want to make sure that you clean the floor rugs and the shower curtain often.

These two things can hold odors for months when you don’t wash them.

Wipe down walls / baseboards / side of the tub

To go along with washing the rugs and shower curtain you want to make sure that you are wiping down those other areas that might have gotten some urine on them. This includes the side of the tub, walls, and baseboards, especially in the area behind the toilet.

Make your DIY Urine Spray

Let’s be honest, boys struggle to aim, so it will get on the sides of the toilet, the base of the toilet, as well as on the floor. Using a DIY urine spray on these areas will alleviate the smell that has been living in these trouble areas.

To make your DIY Urine Spray you will need:

  • Spray bottle
  • 1 part water
  • 1 part vinegar
  • 2 tsp of lemon juice (can be omitted)
  • 1-2 drops of dish soap

To make your DIY urine spray take the lid off your spray bottle and add equal parts water and vinegar. Then add your lemon juice if you want a lemon-fresh scent. Use 1-2 drops of dish soap and put the lid on. Give your bottle a shake and you now have your own DIY Urine spray.

Spray this on the floor around the toilet, the sides of the toilet as well as the base. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes to let it really do its job, then wipe clean.

Replace / wash the garbage can

You have cleaned your whole bathroom and scrubbed the toilet and floor for hours and your bathroom still smells, what the heck?

Well, sometimes your smell isn’t actually coming from the toilet, it is actually coming from your trash can.

I recommend either buying a new trash can now and again OR doing a deep clean on it to remove the odor coming from it.

Wipe down the bathroom every night

Wiping down the bathroom every night will really help. I usually recruit my older kids that after they brush their teeth to grab a wipe and clean the counters and around the toilet seat lid.

By wiping down the bathroom this prevents any urine from becoming a stuck on gross mess overnight.

Change your toilet paper
