It’s perfectly natural for parents to worry about their children’s health. No matter how hard you try, you won’t be able to stop yourself. But if you worry too much and try to shelter your children too much, you could affect their development. Having said that, it’s important that you look out for them. If you want them to stay happy and healthy, you need to be on the lookout for any health problems that might become more serious.
That doesn’t mean you should take them to the doctors every time they have a cold, but you do need to watch out for these common health problems in children.
Ear infections are a common problem for children and they cause a lot of pain. Most of the time they’re fairly harmless and they’ll just need some antibiotics to clear it up. But in some cases, it could develop into something more serious and even lead to long-term hearing issues.
It’s not that common but it’s still worth visiting a pediatric audiologist to double check that there isn’t anything more serious going on. If your child ever complains of pain in their ears or trouble hearing, you should get them down to a doctor right away.
Strep throat is a health problem that can be mistaken for a cold when it first starts out because the symptoms are often similar. However, when it starts to develop they’ll get severe pain in the throat that can get so bad they can’t swallow food properly. They’ll also get a fever and abdominal pains too.
The bad news is that you can’t always avoid it because it’s very contagious. Usually, it gets passed from child to child through coughing and sneezing but even if they play with toys that an infected child has used before, they can catch strep throat.
The best way to avoid it is to be aware of any other children at school that have strep throat and make sure that you’re keeping your kids away from them until it cleans up. Regardless of how well you try to protect them from strep throat, there’s always the chance that they’ll catch it.
The good news is, it’s fairly easy to treat. Once you start seeing the symptoms, get them to the doctor and they’ll give you some antibiotics. It should clear up in a few days, just keep them away from any other children until then so they don’t pass it on.
Conjunctivitis, also called pink eye, is a nasty bacterial infection in the eye. The symptoms include redness around the eyes, severe itching, a yellow crusty discharge from the eyes and trouble seeing properly. It’s often caused by irritants in the air so there isn’t always a way to avoid it.
If they do catch pink eye, they need to be kept away from any other children. They can pass it on easily. The doctor will give you eye drops to treat it. Unfortunately, it isn’t that pleasant for your child but it should clear up quickly.
Your child is likely to catch at least one of these illnesses at some point so always be on the lookout for the symptoms and get them to the doctor right away.
