White Chocolate Hot Chocolate Bombs Recipe

Hot chocolate bombs are taking over this year as one of the biggest holiday trends and I have to say that I’m obsessed! I didn’t think hot chocolate could get any better but I guess I was wrong! These White Chocolate Hot Chocolate Bombs are so much fun!

It’s a brilliant idea, really. Your kids will love them at home and they make the best gifts for friends and family!

My favorite way to dress up my white chocolate hot cocoa bombs is with my homemade hot chocolate mix, marshmallows, candy cane pieces, and sometimes even some Christmas sprinkles.

But don’t think that hot cocoa bombs are limited just to Christmas time! Make them for Valentine’s day by adding some heart-shaped sprinkles and white chocolate chips. Or add a fall twist by adding some pumpkin pie spice. The options are endless!

How to Make Hot Chocolate Bombs

Making hot chocolate bombs is actually pretty simple!

If you haven’t seen hot chocolate bombs yet, they are balls of chocolate that are filled with hot chocolate mix and other mix-ins. When you put them in hot milk the chocolate melts and they beautifully reveal insides that mix into the milk for a perfect cup of hot chocolate.

All you really need to do to make them is grab a great sphere mold, melt some chocolate to coat the mold, and fill the sphere with your choice of mix-ins before closing it up.

I’ll walk you through it here!

  • 1 cup white chocolate chips
  • Hot chocolate mix
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Sprinkles, optional
  • Crushed candies , optional

The Following Tools Will Be Helpful When Making These!

How to Make Hot Chocolate Bombs With White Chocolate

  • The first step in making hot chocolate bombs is putting a large plate in the freezer. This will help you a lot later in the process!
  • Next, take your white chocolate chips and place them in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 60 seconds and remove the chocolate chips.
  • If the chocolate has started to melt, you should turn your power down to about 60% so you don’t risk burning it. If not, you can keep it at full power!
  • Continue microwaving your chocolate at 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until it’s completely melted and smooth.
  • Add a spoonful of chocolate into each of the cavities of the silicone mold, using the back of the spoon to spread it as evenly as you can around the whole cavity.
  • Once the cavities are filled, wipe off any excess chocolate and place the mold into the freezer for 10-15 minutes to set.
  • This is a good point to prepare any of your fillings and toppings. You might need to crush some candy pieces, melt some melting wafers for a drizzle on top, or whatever you like!
  • When the molds have set completely, remove them from the freezer as well as the cold plate you place there earlier.
  • Carefully remove each half of the spheres and place them on the cold plate.
  • Spoon 2 heaping spoonfuls of hot chocolate mix and a few marshmallows into 3 of the halves. You can also add any mix-ins that you want in your white chocolate hot chocolate bombs.
  • Now it’s time to seal! You can do this two ways. First, you can take the un-filled half of your spheres and gently melt the opening side on a hot frying pan. While melted, attach the 2 sides of the sphere together.
  • If you’d like to try another method, melt some chocolate and pipe some around the opening end of the filled halves, and add the top half right on top. You may need to add some additional chocolate and smooth it out with a spoon.

Tips Tricks and FAQs

  • You’ll want to find some really good quality chocolate chips to use in this recipe! Cheaper chocolate chips tend to burn or seize much easier than nicer chocolate. Skip the off-brand for this recipe and grab some Ghiradelli or other similar chocolate chips for the best results!
  • If you want to end up with hot chocolate spheres and not hot chocolate ovals, make sure that you fill your cavities all the way up! They should be filled to the top with a thin coating of chocolate so that the halves connect properly.
  • The best way to get a perfect opening hot chocolate bomb is by placing it seam side up and pouring hot milk right on top of the seam. It should burst open, release all that yummy hot chocolate, and make the perfect cup of cocoa!
  • Make sure that all your mix-ins that go inside the hot chocolate bomb are appropriate for hot chocolate. I love a good set of lovely sprinkles, but they can be a choking hazard if they don’t melt so be careful with your choices!

How do I avoid getting fingerprints on my hot chocolate bombs?

Your hands are pretty warm, so the longer you touch the spheres the more of a chance you have of getting melting or fingerprints.

The frozen plate should help with this, but if you are working slowly you may want to do one hot chocolate bomb at a time and put the other pieces in the freezer while you work.

If you still get fingerprints, try wearing some gloves! They’ll provide a barrier from the warmth and limit any transfer of prints.

Storage

The key to storing hot chocolate bombs is making sure that they don’t melt! If you live somewhere warmer, you may want to keep them in the fridge. If not, they will be just fine on the counter in an airtight container.

Either way, they’ll stay fresh for about 4-6 months!
