How Can I Spend Less Money at the Grocery Store?

Stressed over how much money you spend on your families groceries each week? Here are some super easy tips on how you can not only save money at the grocery store but also to plan cheap meals that are more nutritious.

What is meal planning?

The biggest advice I have on eating on a budget is to meal plan. Meal planning is basically the idea of thinking about meals ahead of time so that by the time dinner rolls around you aren’t scrambling to figure out what you are going to get on the table. Having a meal plan allows you to plan a variety of foods to eat while being able to maximize the usage of the items you are buying, all while staying in budget.

Next, to really get the best bang for your buck you should be checking out your local grocery store ads to see what is on sale for that week. Doing this allows you to stay focused when looking for recipes. It also allows you to keep your mind on recipes that have ingredients that are on sale that week. Remember, the goal here is to save money at the grocery store. One of my favorite tricks for spending less on groceries is taking advantage of additional promotions like buy 10 save $10 or things that have corresponding coupons.

Find Recipes

Looking for recipes can be very overwhelming. If you are just beginning to meal plan then start by compiling all of your favorite recipes and separate them into categories such as chicken, beef, sides, etc. This allows you to quickly go to recipes that use the items that are on sale that week, without having to search through all of them. If you don’t have any favorite recipes or are looking for some new ones to add, check out some of our weekly meal plans for some quick, easy, and tasty ideas. When meal planning on a budget, try to avoid recipes that require a lot of ingredients. Some ideas you find on Pinterest may sound amazing (and probably are) but require a lot of ingredients and will make a lot of extra dishwashing in the end. My advice is to keep it simple. Have a protein, a vegetable or two, and a starch.

A great tip for when you are trying to save money at the grocery store is to eliminate a few meals that have meat. There are a variety of proteins out there that fill you up and don’t cost as much as meat. A couple of examples would be to use beans or quinoa. If you really HAVE to have meat try using canned tuna or chicken as an alternative to fresh but be careful because sometimes this can cost more if they are not on sale or used in large amounts.

Fill in your Meal Plan and Hit the Store

I used to hate taking toddlers to the grocery store, but then I discovered 7 genius ways to keep your toddler entertained at the grocery store you want to start doing now!

Now that you have your recipes start plugging them into the meal plan template. Be aware of what days are busier for you and plan accordingly for those days. When thinking of how many days you need to plan for, think of these three things:

  • How often do you want to grocery shop? The fewer times you have to travel to the grocery store, the more money you are going to save. Try to get in the habit of shopping no more than once a week. I say this because those random stops after work to pick up a tub of ice cream add up quickly and usually result in going over your monthly budget.

  • Plan meals that use fresh ingredients such as herbs or fresh vegetables towards the beginning of the week. This makes for less food being thrown away because they have sat too long in the fridge.
  • What meals will have enough leftovers for another day? Having leftover nights are a great way to save money and time. If there are days that are busier, make sure the day or two before you plan a meal that will have lots of leftovers, or prepare a double batch so you will, so that you don’t have to cook every night.

Or Grocery Shop Online and Pick Up

If you are like me, you dread going into the grocery store, especially if you have all of your kids with you. For some reason, I always end up having more items in my cart then I intended, whether it’s my children throwing things in the cart or my hands developing a mind of their own and doing a little impulse shopping. Have no fear, many stores now offer {Affiliate Link} online grocery pick up, which is amazing! I have found that doing online orders helps me to save money at the grocery store because I am not winding up with those extra items in my cart.
