During pregnancy, there are days you feel so exhausted that you don’t even want to get out of bed. Even going to the grocery store seems like an impossible feat. This is why setting boundaries is so important. You need to take care of yourself, so that you can take care of your baby.
Don’t feel guilty saying no! If you feel overwhelmed when someone asks you to cover their shift, attend an event, or bring a dessert to a potluck, it is perfectly fine to say no. Know your limits and respect what your body is telling you it can and cannot do.
You should also set limits with friendly stomach pokers. If you are uncomfortable with them touching your tummy, speak up! It is better to speak up now, than to be frustrated all afternoon.
Avoid Spicy Foods
Pregnancy is notorious for causing extreme heartburn. As such, it is important to avoid spicy foods whenever possible. Spicy foods aggravate heartburn, making it even worse. If you want to reduce stress during pregnancy, avoid spicy foods and the pain that comes with them.
However, if you enjoy eating spicy foods and if that is all you crave, hope is not lost! You can eat spicy foods in moderation, as long as you have an antacid handy. Keep antacids and a water bottle on your nightstand at all times during pregnancy. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
Wear Comfortable Clothing
Is it just me, or is it so stressful to wear clothes that are just a bit too tight? It drives me crazy all day and I can’t relax. During pregnancy, your body undergoes a lot of changes. There is no way you are going to fit into your pre-pregnancy jeans. So stop worrying about that! Invest in a quality pair of maternity jeans that are stretchy and comfortable. It will change your pregnancy!
Shop online to save the hassle of going to the store. Gap, Nordstrom, Target, and Amazon all have a lot of maternity clothes that are super comfortable and cute. Order it, try it on, and if it doesn’t fit, send it back and try again! Most stores will pay for return shipping within 30-60 days.
Exercise is one of the best natural stress-relievers. Even if you feel incredibly sick with morning sickness, it is important to stay as active as possible. Find time to walk around the block, do yoga, or hit the gym.
As you exercise, your body will release endorphins that send happy chemicals throughout your body. So, even if you are sick, you will feel much better about yourself and your circumstances if you make time to exercise.
Have Your Husband Help
My husband got me through my first pregnancy. When I was feeling overly stressed or worried, he would offer to paint my nails, or give me a foot rub. While he would paint my nails, we would talk about everything that I was worried about. Talk about a win-win! I was able to vent my stress and get pampered at the same time!
In general, husbands want to be more involved in pregnancy and birth than we give them credit for. They just don’t know how! Ask your husband for help if you are feeling overwhelmed. He will appreciate feeling useful and it will create an added layer of love to your relationship.
One of the best ways to relieve stress is to do small, simple tasks each day to bring you closer to achieving your goal. Many women feel the urge to nest while they are pregnant. In essence, “nesting” is an urge to get things ready for baby. If you have a nesting bug, try meal prepping for when baby is born, organizing the nursery, or stocking up on baby essentials.The good thing about nesting is that it reduces stress while also accomplishing a lot of your to-do list.
Rest, Rest, Rest
Finally, it is so important that you rest as much as possible before your baby is born. Take naps whenever you can, and try to sleep in. Your body needs rest! You are literally creating a tiny human inside of your stomach. That is going to require a lot of energy.
Don’t feel guilty for sleeping. One day you will look back and be so thankful for the times you were able to rest during pregnancy. You will never get those days back, so enjoy them while you can!
