The Day My Daughter Locked Me Out

It was like any other Wednesday. It was naptime, and my daughter did not want to take a nap. She had gotten up a few times and so finally I said she could lay on my bed.

All of a sudden, a loud noise was outside! I was trying to figure out what on earth it was. Talie comes running out! “What’s that?” I told her I would go look outside. As I went outside I noticed that the power company was working on the lines… It’s a long story, but the short version… We live on an easement with the power company and they are putting these ginormous new lines up behind our house. The big drill was out. They were drilling the hole for the new pole.

I walk back to the house to tell her that it was just the drill and make her go back to bed! As I get to the back door she is waving at me! I wave back. I go to open the door. The handle turns, but nothing… I turn the handle again, but still nothing! She had locked me out! Her and TJ were inside alone! Crap! Panic came over me, what was I going to do?

Locked Out

I really wanted to yell and scream, but I knew I needed to stay calm. “Talie, turn the knob.” She tries she is too short. I am beginning to panic even more! How did this happen? Why didn’t I take her with me?” She continues to try and I cheer her on from outside…

It doesn’t work… She is too short!

Luckily, I had my phone in my hand. I knew I needed to call the cops and tell them that I am “mom of the year.” As I go to dial the number, something tells me to have Talie try one more time…

“Talie, go get the chair…” Stand on the chair and unlock the door. I see her go to her dinner chair and sit down on it… That’s not working. “Bring it over here.” She pushes it and it gets stuck on the rug… She sits down on it again and tries to reach the knob.

Nope, still too short

All of a sudden I see her wheels turning. She gets down pushes the rug out of the way, scoots the chair to the door. I am just praying she can figure out how to turn the knob! Because we all know kids only know how to turn it one way when they are learning! She stands up on the chair… Fidgets a little more. With every fidget, I try to open it… Still nothing. And then I hear it click… I turn the handle, the door flies open!

Relief instantly comes over me! I pick her up and hug her… She laughs! I have a feeling this won’t be the last time this happens!
