We are huge fresh breakfast fans at our house! Sunday is really the day where I get up and make a hot breakfast for everyone before we wake up and get ready for church.
For special occasions like birthdays, I always make funfetti pancakes though! Let’s be honest, pancakes are like having cake for breakfast so adding some sprinkles and color just makes it extra special.
But if I’m trying to make a quick breakfast, I always reach for my Mason jar and make pancakes in a jar! They are quick, easy and fun for kids to join you in the kitchen with because they can do all the shaking.

1 cup milk
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 cup flour
2 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt

How to Make this Mason Jar Pancake Recipe
The great thing about these pancakes in a jar is that they don’t make a huge mess!
First, you want to put the milk, egg, and oil in a 32 oz jar. It’s best if it’s a wide-mouth jar so you can easily get the ingredients in the jar. Twist the lid on tight and shake until well mixed.
Next, add the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt to the jar with the milk and egg mixture. Put the lid on and shake vigorously for about 2 minutes until everything is combined. Be sure not to overmix!
Once all of the ingredients are combined, let your batter rest for about 10 minutes.
Then you will lightly oil or butter a griddle or frying pan and heat it to a medium temperature. Don’t make it too hot. You don’t want to burn your pancakes!
Pour the batter onto the griddle straight from your jar. Use about ¼ of a cup of batter for each pancake.
When the edges of you pancake look dry and the bubbles on the surface of the pancakes begin to pop, flip the pancakes over to cook the other side.
Once your pancakes are flipped, cook your pancakes in a jar for another 2 to 3 minutes until they are lightly browned on both sides.
Finally, serve your pancakes in a jar with some hot syrup or jam and your favorite fruit.
Tips and Tricks for Pancakes in a Jar
- Be sure to not flip your pancakes too early! You don’t want undercooked mushy pancakes. Make sure you wait for the bubbles to pop on the top side of your pancake before you flip it over. Also, be sure that the edges are looking nice and crisp before you flip.
- One of my best tips is to always rest the batter. Let your batter rest a bit! You should let it sit for about 10 minutes. Why? Because letting your batter rest will give your baking powder a chance to activate.
- Don’t overmix your batter. You don’t want chewy pancakes, so just shake your pancake mix up until your ingredients are combined.
- Preheat your pan or griddle before you put your pancake batter on, but make sure it’s not too hot! You want your pan to be evenly heated.

Honestly, you can make pancakes ahead of time but they won’t be as fresh! If you do decide to make the batter ahead of time, make sure to refrigerate it.
If you choose to cook the pancakes ahead of time, be sure to fully cook you pancakes! Then put them on a cookie sheet and put them in the fridge or freezer to cool down for about 30 minutes.
Once cooled, put them in a plastic bag and either refrigerate or fully freeze them.
When warming them up for consumption, the microwave is the best and easiest way to reheat pancakes. For one pancake, it only takes about 20 to 30 seconds. If frozen, it will be closer to 30 seconds. If you are wanting to do more than one, try doing about 6 pancakes for 1 minute in the microwave.
You can also put your refrigerated or frozen pancakes in the toaster to quickly heat them up! Be sure to turn your toaster up to a bit of a higher heat to make sure your pancake gets fully heated through.
Can I use water instead of milk in my pancakes in a jar recipe?
Yes! You totally can substitute water for the milk in your pancakes, but just know that the texture of your pancakes will be a bit different and may have a little bit less flavor.
A good way to counteract having less flavor is to add some chocolate chips or some fruit to your batter.
