Packing the Perfect Lunch for Kids
As parents, we are constantly learning what is best for our child, especially when it comes to nutrition for them! From the very beginning, we are making decisions on what we feel is best for our child when it comes to nutrition. Are we going to try to breastfeed or will we choose to formula feed? Once they hit around 6 months we start to introduce our kids to thicker and more textured foods until they’re on solids. After this, our kids get older and become a little pickier and we now need to pack them the perfect lunch for little kids packed with nutrition! So, what goes in the perfect lunch for kids?
You’ll also want to have the following tools to make it easier:
- Bentgo Kids Lunchbox
- Insulated Lunch Box
- Reusable Waterbottle with Straw
- Thermos Food Jar
- Reusable Utensils
- Reusable Baggies
Choose the Main Entree
Every perfect lunch for kids should have a main entree. Most of the time, this will be a sandwich. If you do opt for a sandwich, use whole grain bread. Try to incorporate some sort of salad or vegetables into the mix. But remember that there are alternatives – and we don’t mean a salad. After all, what kid wants to eat a salad?
Instead of a sandwich, you could make sushi. This can incorporate vegetables such as cucumber or avocado into rice and seaweed rolls and wraps. You could have pasta with tomatoes and cheese. If you use whole grain pasta, you can up fiber consumption. The tomatoes will contain vitamins and antioxidants and the cheese will top up their calcium levels.
Whatever main component you choose, make sure that it ticks off multiple dietary boxes at the same time as being filling. You don’t want your little one’s stomach to be rumbling throughout the day.
Piece of Fruit
A piece of fruit is always a great option in the perfect lunch for kids. It provides extra nutrients that their body needs. An apple, a banana, a kiwi, or an orange. Chat with your child about what kind of fruit they would like and throw it in there. Chances are if they choose to include it in their lunch they will eat it! If you have time on your hands, you could even chop this into small pieces and store it in a plastic container for them.
Add a Snack
Most parents like to include an extra little snack. This could be a bag of chips or chocolate bar, but why not try for a healthier snack for the perfect lunch for kids. Perhaps cut raw vegetables into slices and provide some sort of dip. You could have celery sticks, carrot sticks, cucumber sticks, or apple slices. For a dip, consider peanut butter, sauces, or even something sweet for the apples.
Don’t Forget a Drink
If you are like me, more often than I remember I forget to pack a drink! It’s important for us to remember, this important aspect so our kids can stay hydrated. I usually use a water bottle similar to this for water for little ones. If your kids are older, these are becoming more and more popular!
When packing their drinks try to avoid things that contain a lot of sugar or that are fizzy. Here are some good options for flavored water kid’s drinks.
Lastly, we can’t forget our kids favorite part, the special treat to make it the perfect lunch for kids! Throwing in a small treat in their lunch will ensure happy kids when they come home from school! Your little one’s face will light up as they open their box up and find something extra exciting in there. A few chunks of chocolate, a small slice of cake, or something similar waiting for them. Remember that moderation is key.
There you have it, how to pack the perfect lunch for kids! This will not only fill them up, but it will have them looking forward to discovering what is in their lunch box each day!
