You’re expecting your second baby! What an exciting time of life for you and your growing family! So many emotions come along with having a new baby and sometimes second pregnancy planning can seem a bit overwhelming… You might be wondering where to even start!

We’ve put together some things that are important when preparing for baby #2 along with your second baby checklist you will be feeling totally prepared!

Prepare your child

Having a new baby is a huge transition for everyone but especially for your child. They’re used to being the center of your universe and mommy and daddy’s number one pal! It is good to prepare them as much as you can for what’s about to happen. Of course, depending on what age they are, they might not totally grasp what’s going on so just do your best!

A fun way to teach them about a new baby and get them excited would be to get them a baby doll to practice holding and taking care of a baby. Another way to teach them about this upcoming transition would be to get a book that talks about getting a new sibling. The New Baby by Mercer Mayer is a great option. Another cute option is Waiting for Baby by Rachel Fuller.

Make arrangements for your child

When preparing for baby #2, one of the most important things is to have a plan for what you will do when you go to the hospital.

Make arrangements well ahead of time with either a babysitter or a family member so that you don’t have to stress about it when you’re heading out the door to the hospital!

It could be helpful to write down a schedule of what a typical day looks like for your child so that whoever is watching them can help keep some sort of routine that they are used to.

Freezer meals

Freezer meals for new moms are seriously going to save your life! To prepare for baby #2, stock up that freezer so you have meals you can just pop into the crockpot or instant pot. You can start by making one freezer meal a week or you could knock out a bunch in one day.

Stock the pantry

Another good thing to do when preparing for baby #2 is to stock your pantry. Make sure you have all the pantry staples you think you’ll need so you don’t have to rush off to the store anytime soon.

You know those cupboards and drawers that have been bugging the heck out of you? Now is the time to declutter and get feeling organized! Once the baby comes, you are going to be a little occupied and those projects are going to be put on hold for a while. You will be thanking yourself later when you come home from the hospital to a clean, organized space!

Get baby’s room ready

Have you decided where you’re going to have baby sleep? Wash the crib sheets, stock the diapers and wipes and make sure that sound machine still works!

Purchase items you will need

The good thing about preparing for baby #2 is that you probably already have a lot of the things you’ll need for a new baby. There are a couple of things you might want to buy when preparing for baby #2.

If you like to go out and about, a double stroller might be a really good investment. If you are looking to have a super versatile stroller check out my favorite the Baby Jogger City Select! It goes from 2 to 1 seat in a matter of seconds.

Another thing that made my life SO much easier was a baby carrier. I loved using this Ergobaby Aura Baby Wrap Carrier when my baby was a newborn and as they got a little bit bigger, I loved using this Ergobaby Carrier.

A baby carrier is a must buy when you’re preparing for baby #2 because it allows you to have your hands free to help your older child and do all the other things that you need to do while still holding your baby!

When it came to a baby monitor, I really wanted to be able to keep an eye on both of my kiddos so for me it was worth it to invest in a dual baby monitor. This Babysense baby monitor is awesome because you can actually see both rooms at once.

One on one time with your child

This time can be a little bittersweet. You’re so used to it just being you and your little one and it can be a little bit sad to see that constant one on one time go.

Soak in all those moments together! My husband and I took turns taking our oldest out on a little date so they could get one on one time with both of us before the baby was born.

Self Care

Self care for moms is so important when you’re preparing for baby #2! You deserve some pampering and relaxation before this new little one comes into the world!

As moms, sometimes we spend all our energy caring for everyone else that we forget to care for ourselves. But if we are taking care of ourselves, we are going to be better moms for our kids! So soak in a warm bath, go get a pedicure or just do something for YOU.

  1. Great ideas!! When we had baby #2 (and #3), we brought gifts from the baby to the big siblings with us to the hospital. That way, when the big siblings came to visit, they got gifts from their new baby! It really helps to curb any possible jealousy they could feel. 🙂

  2. I’m so glad you put self-care on here! Too many people overlook it, and they end up stressed out during delivery, which makes recovery worse. Great post!
