Eating as a family is fantastic. There are so many benefits to sitting down at the end of a long day at school or work and eating together. Some of these include introducing your children to healthy and nutritious food. It also gives them a chance to try new things. Instilling a love of food by making eating a social activity. It also gives your family a chance to spend some time together without distractions. Enjoying time together, no matter what else has gone on in your day.
Now that so many parents work full-time, and our children have got so much going on in and out of school, family meal times are more important than ever. But, so many of us don’t have the time to cook. Instead, we sit around the tv, scrolling through social media feeds on our phones, eating ready meals and takeouts. Our diets are worse than ever, we’re not giving each other our full attention, and as adults, we can’t enforce tech-free meal times, when we’re just as bad.
One of the best ways to get back into the habit of sitting down together as a family, and turning all of our screens off, is finding the right meals. Healthy, tasty and filling family meals that are easy to cook or can be prepared in advance so that you just need to throw them in the oven when you get in from home from a busy day. Here are some fabulous meals for your fabulous family to enjoy.
Pasta is one of those things that most people like. It’s also easy to cook, filling and ideal for growing kids. On top of all that, the biggest pull perhaps is how much you can do with this really simple food. Fry some chicken and chorizo in a calorie-controlled cooking spray over medium heat in a copper pan until the chicken is browned. Add some onions and peppers and cook until soft. Cook some pasta while this is going on. Tip it all into a large ovenproof bowl, stir in a tin of chopped tomatoes and two tablespoons of soft cheese. Leave this in the fridge until you’re ready to eat, sprinkle over your favorite cheese and bake in the oven for 30 minutes. A super simple meal that’s easy to reheat whenever you’re all ready.
You can also add garlic, spinach, bacon, pancetta, and any other easy to cook vegetables that you might like. This recipe works best with a tube pasta such as penne or rigatoni.
Homemade pizza is a fantastic option if you want to get the kids more involved in cooking, or you are looking for an easy way to get them to try new ingredients. You can make pizza dough yourself, and freeze it in portions until you are ready. Or you can buy ready-made pizza bases and add toppings yourself. For a basic pizza sauce, simmer a can of chopped tomatoes with a pinch of salt and pepper. Add two cloves of crushed garlic and a teaspoon of mixed herbs. Then cook for around 20 minutes until the sauce has reduced and the tomato chunks are soft. This allows you to mash them until smooth with a fork. This can also be frozen for another day.
When cool, spread liberally on your pizza, and add any toppings you all like over cheese. It’s great to place some chopped vegetables, sliced meats, and whatever else your family likes to put on pizza. Bake in the oven for around 15 minutes until the cheese is golden brown.
Stir fry is fantastically easy, cheap and tasty. You can buy sauces, or make your own with fruit juice, spices, and soy sauce. It’s always a great idea to have a variety of frozen meats in the freezer ready to go. Saute these with your sauce of choice and some mixed vegetables. Then add them with wok egg noodles and bean sprouts and enjoy! An easy and notorious meal ready in less than 30 minutes.
Tacos are one of the most popular foods out there. Like stir-fry, pizza and pasta, they are incredibly versatile and a fantastic way to get vegetables into reluctant eaters. Fry some mince and onions with some taco seasoning and place in a bowl. Gently heat your taco shells in the oven. Prepare your family’s favorite taco toppings and enjoy a nice quick homecooked meal!
