Figure out insurance
Once your sweet little one is born, the last thing you’re going to want to do is figuring out how to add them to your insurance plan! You can get the insurance figured out beforehand and avoid the headache of having to do this later while you’re trying to soak in those newborn snuggles and figure out how to juggle your new life!
Call your pediatrician
Another great thing on our checklist for 2nd baby is to get in touch with your pediatrician. Just give them a call to let them know that you are expecting a baby and are hoping to get them in with the same pediatrician your oldest sees. Usually, they’re pretty good about this but sometimes pediatricians aren’t accepting new patients so it would be super helpful to figure all of this out beforehand.
Figure out where the baby will sleep
It is so important to know where the baby is going to sleep once you bring them home from the hospital. Maybe they’ll be sleeping in your room so you’ll want to have a bassinet ready for them. Maybe you’ll want them to be in their own room in a crib. Depending on the age of your oldest, you might need to use the crib they’re currently sleeping in if you don’t want to buy another crib.
This is probably one of the most important things on this second baby checklist because transferring your oldest from a crib to a toddler bed is not an easy task.
This is something that should be done well in advance so they have time to adjust to their new sleeping arrangements before the baby comes home. The last thing you’re going to want to deal with is a newborn AND a toddler all night long so give yourself plenty of time to make this transition if this is what your situation looks like!
Stock the baby supplies
You’re definitely going to want to make sure you have plenty of diapers and wipes ready to go for when you bring home your new baby. You’re not going to want to be rushing to the store to grab diapers when you get home so this is something you’ll want to make sure is ready ahead of time! It would be good to make sure you have diaper rash cream handy as well.
Stock up on postpartum supplies
The last thing you’re going to want to do is make a late-night run to the store for pads! Be sure you set up your postpartum survival kit so you have plenty of pads ready for when you get home. We suggest having some heavy-duty pads, regular pads, and panty liners so that you’re ready for all the stages of recovery!
Next time you’re at the store, grab some nursing pads as well to have on hand in case you need them. We also HIGHLY recommend grabbing a chocolate bar (or 2) for yourself because… well, you deserve it.
Check old baby supplies
Now is the time to dust off the old baby supplies and give them a good wipe down. Make sure all of your supplies are working or have batteries if they need them. Pull out your infant car seat and make sure it’s not expired and ready to go! If you have a baby monitor, make sure it’s working and buy a second camera if you want one in each kid’s room.
Make sure the sound machine is ready to go and your breast pump still works! If you don’t have a breast pump, it might be a good idea to pick one up just in case. Most insurances will actually fully cover a breast pump in your maternity plan so give them a call to double-check!
Go through baby clothes
Next up on our checklist for 2nd baby is to make sure the baby clothes are ready to go. If your new baby is the same gender as your oldest, this is super easy! Pull out those clothes and give them a fresh wash with baby laundry detergent so they’re all ready for your new baby.
If your new little one is the opposite gender, you might have to do a little bit of shopping. You’ll probably want to make sure all those new clothes are washed as well.
Clean out the diaper bag
Now is a great time to clean out your diaper bag! If you are in the market for a new one, check out the Lily Jade Jennifer Diaper bag it is one of a kind and so awesome! Add some of the newborn essentials like diapers, wipes and a pacifier to your diaper bag.
Okay, this item on the second baby checklist is going to save you so much time and energy.
It seriously saved me during those first few months where cooking was the last thing I felt like doing. It’s so nice to be able to have a premade meal that you just pop in the crockpot or instant pot and don’t have to think much more about it than that! These freezer meal ideas are a great place to start if you need some inspiration!
Stock the pantry
Having a full pantry is going to make life so much easier when you come home from the hospital! Make sure to stock up on your oldest’s favorite snacks and your favorite snacks as well! Something I really wanted when I got home from the hospital was fresh fruit.
If that’s something you love too, stock up on plenty of produce to have something yummy and fresh to come home to! We found this second baby checklist item to be such a lifesaver so we could enjoy being at home with our babies instead of rushing to the store.
Pack your hospital bag
Packing your hospital bag is something you’re definitely going to want to do with plenty of time to spare. I felt so much more relaxed knowing that my hospital bag was ready to go whenever I might need it. If you’re not sure what to pack in your hospital bag, check out this hospital bag checklist.
Gift for your oldest
I love preparing a gift for my oldest when a new sibling is on the way. Having a new sibling survival kit is a great way to help with this new change that will happen. Becoming a new big brother or sister is a huge change that might bring a lot of anxiety and worry to your oldest.
Life as they know it is going to be completely transformed so we have found that finding a special gift for them helps them to feel important at this time when all the focus isn’t just on them!
It doesn’t have to be something expensive, just go to the store and grab something you know they’ll love and wrap it up. Bring it to the hospital with you so that when they come to visit, you can give it to them!
Make a plan
This might be one of the most important items on our checklist for 2nd baby! What are you going to do with your oldest while you’re in the hospital? You’ll want to make arrangements ahead of time so you don’t have to stress about it when it’s time to run out the door to the hospital.
I like to have 3-4 people on call to help just in case I can’t get ahold of my first choice when I go into labor.
Make a schedule
Once you figure out a plan for who’s going to watch your oldest, it might be a good idea to write out things your child likes to do, normal snacks/meals that they eat as well as bedtime time and nap time.
