I don’t know about you, but I think being sick as a mom is the worst. I don’t get sick very often, but when I do I am usually hit pretty hard with whatever is going around. When mom gets sick it never seems to be at a convenient time. There is never really any time to relax and sleep off whatever you have. I have found there are a few things you can do to help make your recovery time shorter and still be a good parent when you are sick as a mom.
Don’t Try To Be The Perfect Parent
When you are sick as a mom, it is ok if your children get a little more screen time than usual. Your daily routines don’t have to be as structured as normal.
Don’t worry if dinner is take-out most nights. Give yourself a break and let things go a little. The priority during this time is getting some rest for yourself and getting better.
If you are stressed trying to keep up with everything, it will take longer to get well, and you will only feel worse. So take it easy for a few days. No one will remember that the laundry piled up or that you used paper plates instead of the real ones.
Make It Easy For Kids To Help Themselves
Set out snacks where your kids can get to them easily. Try to get up once and anticipate things your kids will need. You can lay those things out for them—clothes, snacks, videos, games. Then lay back down and rest until there is another urgent need. When you are sick as a mom, anticipating how to make it easy for kids to help themselves will give you a little peace and an opportunity to rest.
When You Are Sick As A Mom, Ask For Help
This is a tough one for many of us moms. We tend to try to do it all ourselves. We even forget to ask our spouses to help. When you are sick as a mom, reach out and ask for help from your spouse, a good friend or a family member. Would you help a friend if she was sick? Most of us would.
Your friends would probably love to help you. Ask them to pick up your children from school. See if they will have them over for a playdate so you can get some extra sleep. Let your husband worry about dinner and putting the kids to bed. You will find yourself feeling much better quicker when you let others help.
You can’t plan for when you are going to be sick, but you can plan for the possibility of being sick. Always have some things on hand that will be helpful for when you are sick.
You can have a new toy, game or video hidden in your closet to bring out and entertain your children.
Prepare a few freezer meals and have a few on hand.
These are great for sick days or extremely busy days. Teach your children how to make their own sandwiches. You can teach them how to make a couple of simple meals so they can prepare their own food when you are sick.
Being sick as a mom is never easy. Taking the time to rest is important. Don’t be afraid to do the bare minimum to keep everyone fed and alive as you give yourself some time to recover.
