What kind of Toddler Plates are available?
With so many options of toddler food plates that are available, it is hard to know which one to buy! We are showing you the best options when it comes to suction plates, stainless steel, high chair tray options, divided plates, toddler snack trays, silicone plates, and more!
Important Factors to Think about When Choosing the best toddler Plates
There are so many important factors to think about when choosing the best plates and trays for toddlers.
- Durability. You want to make sure that the plate is durable. If your toddler were to drop it, would it break? If the answer is yes, that is not a great option. Get a plate that is super durable.
- Dishwasher Safe- I cannot tell you how many times I have bought a toddler plate because it is cute only to discover when I get home that it is not dishwasher safe. As a busy parent, I don’t have time to wash a million plates a day so dishwasher safe is a must for me!
- Age of Child- The age of your child is important when choosing a tray! If your toddler is still in a high chair then a high chair tray is a great option. If you are moving on from those, I always recommend a suction cup type plate next so that your child can’t throw it off the table along with the food creating a big mess that no one likes cleaning up. If your toddler is older than a standard plastic plate is the perfect option.
- Is your Child Picky?- Another factor is determining if your child is picky. If they are then you might want to opt for a divided plate or a toddler snack tray. This allows the food to stay separated which if your kids are like mine one type of food cannot touch another.
The Best Tasting Trays for Toddlers
Tasting trays have become super popular in the last few years and for good reason! It is an easy way for you to offer young children a variety of foods in separate compartments in small portions.
When using tasty trays you want to introduce them to lots of variety of textures and different colors. Add some crunchy food items, some soft foods, and even some raw vegetables for them to try if they have enough teeth to try them!
Examples of Food to Add to Tasting Tray
Vegetables- Try adding green beans, steamed broccoli pieces, peas, cherry tomatoes cut into very small pieces of food, squash, or steamed carrots.
Fruit- Try cutting up strawberries, raspberries, or even blueberries, avocado pieces, mandarin slices, pineapple, banana slices, or apple slices without the peel.
Dairy- cut up string cheese or some cheese cubes or a hard-boiled egg that is sliced.
Grains- Add cooked rice, quinoa, beans
Dips- Kids love to dip things! So add some different sips into their food tray like hummus or nut butters. Include ketchup or ranch if desired as well!
Getting a standard ice cube tray is a great way to separate food items from one another and is perfect for little hands! I love that we all probably have these around the house already so it is perfect to use as snack plates or small meal plates for the kids. This can easily double as a lap tray for snacking in the car or watching a movie! It also ensures that we don’t give our kids too much of one thing and overwhelm them! There are top rack safe in the dishwasher as well making clean up of the actual plate a breeze! These work best for finger foods based on the size.
Another one of our top picks are using 6 cup muffin tins. This allows our Toddlers to try 6 different options at mealtime. When using a muffin tin you can use 1 cup for each food group that you are serving that day. These are easy to store as well as they just stack within one another.
Although this has a higher retail price than the other two options, it is one of our top picks if not our favorite! We love that this was designed with little people in mind! Each divided section has a lid that is easily opened and kids love to push the button in the middle to rotate between snacks giving your kids a fun way to eat and stay entertained and at the table. It is BPA and PVC free, is leak-resistant up to 1 Tablespoon, and is toprack safe in the dishwasher.
The portions are perfect as well, allowing ¼ cup of solid foods in each section. This works great for a toddler snack plate or for mealtime!
If you have active toddlers with an on-the-go lifestyle that goes on playdates, to the park, and to school then these bento-style snack box containers are just what you need! A set of 4 of them has a low price point which makes them perfect for any budget. These are toddler’s favorites because it allows them to have a variety of food options without the food ever touching, perfect for picky eaters who don’t love their food to touch.
I love that these can be used at home or on the go and are an easy storage option for meal planners as they have lids allowing food to stay fresh for the next day! If you have big kids or a good eater who needs a little bit more room we love this 3 compartment solution that is a little bit bigger!
Suction Cup Plates
When using suction plates you want to ensure that you have a smooth surface so that the plate has something to easily stick to. They also work best with a flat surface like a table. These are harder to use on high chairs just because the shape of the plate and the shape of the highchair tray have to fit exactly perfectly.
I cannot say enough great things about these plates! They are made from a super-strong durable silicone which is totally unbreakable! They have strong suction cups to prevent your child from throwing them and they are both dishwasher safe and microwavable safe. They have 3 divided sections making it easy to give your child options when eating. These come in a variety of colors (3 per set) and the price point is great making them one of our top picks!
This is another favorite among many moms and dads! This comes in a variety of shapes and colors like a divided dinosaur, divided unicorn (think dips in the small compartment in the unicorn horn!), Winnie the Pooh, or a bright color! We love the high sides on these plates which help kids with learning to use utensils and have a super-strong suction base that we love! If the suction is not strong, just add a bit of water and it will be perfectly suctioned! It is made from 100% silicone.
Munchkin is a name trusted by parents and for good reason! These divided suction plates do not disappoint! They come in pink, purple, blue, and green so that there should be a color that your child loves! They are geared for kids 6 months and up and have quick-release tabs to release the suction.
We can’t forget about the OXO Stick and Stay Suction Plate! This is available in three different colors and has great suction that moms and dads rave about! It has a toddler-proof design, but it is easy for grownups to remove when needed. The great thing about this plate is that it fits most high chair trays. We love the high curved sides so that less food ends up on the floor while kids are learning to feed themselves making it a great baby food tray option!
Divided Plates for Toddlers
Once your child hits about 1 year of age or older, you can start to think about using a non-suction plate. Of course, if you have active toddlers it might take them a little bit longer to not want to try and toss the food. Regardless of when you start using divided plates with toddlers without suction cups, these are our favorite options.
If you are looking for a stainless steel option you are going to love this stainless steel bus with divided sections! This bus is divided into 5 different small compartments to introduce your child to a variety of foods in every meal. It is durable stainless steel, mold-resistant, stackable for easy storage, and is easy to clean. You can’t help but love this option!
Re-play is one of our favorite products for kids products! We love that they are super affordable, have a quality product, and are used from recyclable milk jugs! That’s right! 1 divided plate saves 3 milk jugs from the landfill. Since these come in a 3 pack you will be saving 9 milk jugs! How is that for saving the environment while using a high quality product! These are microwavable / dishwasher safe and we love the high sides to help kids learn to feed themselves! These also come in so many color combinations that sometimes the hardest thing is choosing which colors to get!
Remember growing up the cafeteria trays we loved? Well, the fast-food tray style is back with these adorable divided plates! These come in a 12 pack where it includes 4 bright colors that your kids will love! The only problem with these is that you can easily put too much food on their plate which can be overwhelming to your kids leaving unwanted items on the tray because they don’t even know where to start eating. So just be sure to use proper portions for your child’s needs and these will be perfect!
I love that the cost is super affordable! In fact, I have used these for kids parties in the past rather than using paper plates!
When your toddler no longer requires a suction cup plate or a divided plate the possibilities are endless! I still like to make sure that it is microwavable safe as well as dishwasher safe. The other thing that is a must is high sides so that as your toddler feeds themselves with utensils they are able to use the sides of the plate to help pick up the food!
When you start using non-divided plates side dishes do tend to touch the main dish so if picky eating is a thing in your house it might cause a bit of an issue with your toddler.
Many people wonder when is the right time to introduce their kids to plates without dividers and it is really up to you and the child. My 6 year old still prefers the divided plates to keep all her food from touching each other.
Like we said in the divided section we are a huge fan of Re-play because not only is it a high-quality product, but it uses recycled milk jugs to make them! We love the high sides on these plates to help toddlers use their utensils to feed themselves. These are stackable for easy storage as well and comes in a variety of colors.
If you are looking for a bamboo organic plate then we highly recommend these plates! Each set comes with 4 plates that are the perfect toddler size! These are natural bamboo, chip-resistant, stain-resistant, and dishwasher friendly making clean-up a breeze!
We absolutely love Lollaland products, anyone else see them on SharkTank?! In this plate set, you will get 7 colorful fast food trays that go with the entire Lollaland collection. We pair the tray/ plate with the cereal bowls and the dipping bowls. This is a splurge purchase that will grow with your kids for years to come! Sometimes the best solution is a bento style container with a lid since the sides are much higher allowing food to stay in the container rather than on the floor. This bento box comes in a set of 4 so that you can easily have a container ready to go when you are!
