How to Make Easter Bunny Cupcakes
Prep Time: 30 minutes
What You Need
- Pre-baked cupcakes
- Buttercream, store-bought or homemade
- Donut holes, store-bought or homemade
- Coconut, optional
- Sprinkles
- Leaf green food coloring
- Mini marshmallows
How to Make Easter Bunny Cupcakes
- The first thing you’ll want to do to make these bunny cupcakes is to color your buttercream. Set aside a small amount of frosting to keep white, and begin adding a small amount of green food coloring to the remainder. Continue adding the food coloring until the frosting is the right color.
- Add your grass tip to a piping bag and fill it halfway with the green buttercream. Be sure not to overfill the piping bag or frosting may come out the back!
- Hold the piping bag straight up and down above one of your cupcakes. Touch the tip to the surface of the cupcake and lift up as you do a quick squeeze and release of the piping bag.
- Repeat this process all around the cupcake to create the grass pattern.
- If you want to keep some of your cupcakes plain with just grass, add the sprinkles now to make sure they stick to the buttercream before it sets.
- If you are adding the bunny tail, start by cutting a donut hole in half.
- Place one half of a donut hole cut side down in the center of a grass-decorated cupcake.
- Add a dollop of the white buttercream right on top of the donut hole to be the tail. If you want the tail to be extra fluffy, add some shredded coconut on top to be the fur.
- Cut a marshmallow in half and stick them about a half-inch apart on the donut hole to look like little bunny feet.
- And that’s it! Repeat the process with the rest of your cupcakes for a whole family of little bunny cupcakes.
Tips Tricks and FAQs
- To get the perfect grass decoration, you’ll want to make sure that you have a smooth sturdy frosting. Skip the jarred icings and get buttercream instead. You can easily make buttercream at home, or you can always pick some up from your local bakery. Most grocery store bakeries offer buttercream for sale and it saves so much time!
- If you notice that your buttercream is starting to break inside the piping bag, it might be because your hands are warm! Try taking a break and putting the buttercream in the fridge for a few minutes and letting your hands cool down. It should come back together once it cools down.
- Marshmallows tend to be a little finicky, so if you notice your marshmallows won’t stick to the donut hole, add a little bit of white buttercream to act as glue so they stick better.
- Make sure that your cupcakes are completely cooled down before decorating them! The buttercream will melt right off if the cupcakes are warm so give them plenty of time to come to room temperature.
Should I use gel food coloring or liquid food coloring?
You can use whatever food coloring that you have around, but I prefer using gel food coloring with buttercream.
Gel food coloring tends to be a bit more pigmented so you’ll get a nice rich color. It’s also thicker so it won’t change the consistency of the buttercream which is especially important when using a grass tip.
Storage
Store the decorated cupcakes covered in the fridge for up to 5 days.
For easy storing, grab a cupcake carrier that seals tight with a lid. It’ll keep your cupcakes fresh without having to deal with plastic wrap!
