If you’ve ever had a kid melt down in the car, get wiggly at the dinner table, or beg for a screen “just for a minute,” trick questions are one of my favorite no-prep fixes. They’re quick, silly, and they get kids thinking and laughing at the same time.

We started using trick questions in our house years ago. It became a thing after I picked up the kids from school. Before this little game, the ride home was filled with cranky kids who were hungry and wanted to bicker at one another. Once we introduced a few trick questions, they became engaged, bickered less, and the ride home actually became enjoyable again!
Below you’ll find a big list of kid-friendly trick questions with answers that work great for ages 5–12—and honestly, teens still get caught by a few of these too. Use them for family dinners, road trips, classroom brain breaks, birthday parties, or anytime you want easy, screen-free fun.
Parent tip: Pick one trick question a day and let everyone take turns answering. Kids love trying to stump each other.

How to Use Trick Questions With Kids
You don’t need to overthink it—trick questions work best when they’re simple and casual.
- Ask one question at a time
- Let everyone guess before revealing the answer
- Play just for fun, or give points if your kids enjoy competition
- Offer a hint if someone gets stuck (this helps younger kids stay engaged)
They’re perfect for family game night, car rides, dinner time, or anytime you want a quick way to connect without screens.
