Commonly Known Animals that Start with E
Arm yourself with fun facts about some of the most known animals that start with E to share when your kids ask about them!
Eagle
Ah, the noble eagle. In the United States, the bald eagle proudly stands as a symbol of patriotism. Did you know that eagles have excellent eyesight? Maybe you’ve heard of the phrase “eagle eyes.” This is because eagles can see four times better than humans! They can spot their prey over three miles away. When hunting small animals, like rabbits, their laser focus is definitely handy!
Earthworm
Squiggly earthworms can be seen all over North America. They’re a favorite meal for many animals, especially birds! If you’ve heard that the “early bird gets the worm,” that’s because worms come out at night when the sun can’t burn them or cause them to overheat. They’re even sometimes called nightcrawlers!
Earwig
When I was a child, I thought that earwigs could burrow into my brain through the ear canal. Luckily, that’s just a popular myth! That’s actually where they got their name…the ear part, not the brain part! Earwigs are gardener’s friends and help eat unwanted bugs like aphids. One super cool fact about earwigs is that they practice matriphagy. Matriphagy is when the young insects eat their mother to gain strength to leave their nest. My kids might do some crazy things, but thankfully they don’t try to eat me!
Eastern Chipmunk
These cute rodents are found primarily in the eastern part of North America. Chipmunks have stretchy pouches in their cheeks to store food. Chipmunks like to hoard their food to make sure they never go hungry. Wouldn’t it be cool to always have a snack with you?
Eastern Lowland Gorilla
Have you ever seen a silverback gorilla in the zoo? These handsome males are the leaders of a group of gorillas called a troop. Eastern lowland gorillas are the largest primates in the world! They can weigh up to 500 pounds and stand six feet tall! Gorillas walk around on their knuckles and can run up to 20 miles per hour. Humans don’t even run that fast with their feet!
Electric Eel
How shocking! These electric fish aren’t actually eels at all! They are more like catfish than true eels. While electric eels can pack a powerful punch, they prefer to set their shock to stun rather than kill. They use their force to warn predators to stay away! Their electric capabilities are also helpful when trying to see through muddy waters. Because their eyesight isn’t very good, they send electric signals to observe the world around them.
Elephant
Did you know that elephants have fantastic memory recall? They never forget anything! This is because their temporal lobe is large and densely compacted, much more than humans are! It makes you wonder how they would do on math quizzes. Probably better than me! These gentle giants are highly sensitive and care about their families. Much like people, elephants band together to take care of each other.
Elk
When a baby elk, called a calf, is born, it doesn’t have any kind of smell! This helps protect it from predators who would want to eat it while its mother is away hunting for food. While their moms hunt, the calves lie in hiding, not moving a single muscle until their moms return. This can take weeks! Calves are excellent at camouflaging and avoiding being seen by predators!
Emperor Penguin
The emperor penguin is the largest of all penguins! They’re about as tall as the average first-grader! They love living in cold climates, like Antarctica, where the temperatures get as cold as -76 degrees Fahrenheit! That’s far too cold for people, even with a warm coat and hot chocolate! To stay warm, emperor penguins group close together and share their body heat. This is especially important for baby penguins who don’t have enough fat to insulate them in freezing temperatures.
Emu
Emus are the ostrich’s Australian cousin! Like the ostrich, Emus have big bodies that stand on tall, strong legs. In fact, the emu is the only bird that has calf muscles. I wonder if they ever go to the gym! Emus are very athletic. They are fast runners, strong swimmers, and can jump almost 7 feet in the air! They’re basically the bird equivalent of Michael Jordan! Another cool thing about emus is that the males are great dads. They sit on the nest and raise the chicks after they hatch!
