Because they live in schools!
Yellowfin tunas are just one of the fantastic Animals That Start With Y on our list! We’ve put together a list that will inspire your kids to head to the library and dig into learning.

Let’s face it: when the kids are not at school, it can be like pulling teeth to get them away from electronics. Now that my boys are teenagers, I feel like we text more than we have an actual conversation!
Since they were toddlers, my kids have always loved learning about animals. Animals are consistently the ace in the hole when I want my kids to focus on anything other than their video games. I love when we pull out a list of animals and pick one that sounds interesting. Then, we can look up animal trivia, watch videos on YouTube, or head to the zoo to learn more about the animal.
I feel like animal facts help me hold on to my kids’ childhoods a little longer. Before I know it, they’ll be grown and off having adventures on their own. I know that we will all remember our fun animal memories, though!
Are you ready to start making animal memories of your own? Our list of Animals That Start With The Letter Y is the perfect place to start! Happy adventuring!

Yak
Yaks are super cool cattle that are found in the Himalayas! They look a lot like American buffalo, with the temperament of dairy cows. In Tibet, some people will keep yaks as pets! That would be one big animal to housetrain! People attempting to hike Mount Everest will often bring a yak along for the journey. The yak can carry valuable supplies for the hikers so they can save their energy for the dangerous climb. Yaks can also carry people if they’re too tired to continue or are too hurt to walk.
Yellow Baboon
Do you know the difference between an ape and a monkey? Monkeys have tails, and apes do not! If you’ve ever seen a baboon’s naked booty, you know that they’re definitely part of the ape family! Yellow baboons have two large canine teeth that will intimidate anything silly enough to try to attack them. The only animals big enough to take a yellow baboon down are big cats, like leopards and lions.

Yellow Jacket
Colonies of yellow jackets can range from about 4,000 worker bees to over 100,000 bees! In fact, one of the largest colonies ever found was in South Carolina. It held over 250,000 yellow jackets! A few varieties of yellow jackets will build their nests above ground, but most build them underground. Because these wasps can sting a person many times in a row, underground nests are very dangerous!
Yorkshire Terrier
The Yorkshire terrier, or Yorkie, is a tiny dog that is very family-friendly! They love people and are especially good with young children. Even though Yorkies have long fur, it’s more like human hair than dog fur. This makes them a favorite option for people with dog allergies! Yorkies might be small, but they are mighty! They are vigilant watchdogs and will alert their family to any sign of danger. Yorkies are the goodest boys and girls!

Yellowfin Tuna
You may know yellowfin tuna by its other name: ahi tuna. If you’ve ever had raw tuna, there’s a good chance it was a yellowfin tuna! Cultures around the world feast on this oceanic delicacy! Yellowfin tuna get their name from yellow dorsal and tail fins. As fully mature fish, yellowfin tuna will swim with dolphins because they’re about the same size!
Yucatan Spiny-Tailed Iguana
Yucatan spiny-tailed iguanas live in Central America and Mexico, in the Yucatan Province. These cool-looking lizards have bristled spines that run from the top of their heads to the tips of their tails. They look like they have a totally awesome mohawk! In some areas of Central America, the local people call these iguanas the “chicken of the trees.” Central Americans will hunt the iguanas for their meat! I guess it tastes like chicken!

Yellow-headed Amazon Parrot
The exotic yellow-headed Amazon parrot has an electric green body with a bright yellow head. Due to their popularity as pets, wild parrots have become endangered. Thankfully there are now laws in place to prevent poaching, but the damage to the wild parrot population was substantial. Now, all yellow-headed Amazon parrots that are kept as pets must have been bred in captivity. If you’re lucky enough to meet one of these friendly birds, you might be surprised that they’re very talkative! They also have beautiful singing voices!
