As soon as November 1st rolls around, my family is ready to switch from apple cider to hot cocoa! There is something magical about a steaming cup of cocoa to usher in the Christmas season. At the beginning of November, I always make a big batch of Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix to keep on hand for when the cravings hit! We also love trying new recipes with fun flavor combinations like this Pumpkin Spice Hot Chocolate or these Oreo Hot Chocolate Bombs.

With hot chocolate being a family favorite I knew that our elf had to join in the fun this year. That is why we created this super cute Elf on the Shelf hot cocoa bar. 

When the kids saw it they went crazy! It was so easy to set up and a huge hit with all the kids. They loved enjoying a cup of hot cocoa with our elf befre school.

What is an Elf on the Shelf?

Each year, Santa sends special elf scouts to homes with children around the world. These Elf scouts arrive with a special Arrival Letter reminding kids of the rules and responsibilities of having an Elf on the Shelf. It’s an honor for kids to host elves each year! 

There are two rules for having an Elf on the Shelf. 

First, your new elf friend needs a name! Gather the kids together to vote on their favorite option. Then, you can have a naming ceremony where you announce your elf’s name!

The second rule is the most important one: NO TOUCHING! When an Elf on the Shelf is touched by human hands, they lose their magic and have to go back to the North Pole to heal. Luckily, elves heal quickly, but it may be a few days before they’re able to return to their scouting duties.  

How to Use the Elf on the Shelf Hot Cocoa Bar

• Print the Elf on the Shelf Hot Cocoa Bar printable on cardstock to ensure your stand is sturdy.
• Cut the images out along the lines. Don’t forget to cut out the opening for your elf to serve the drinks! If you want to have a little table for the cups, leave an inch of the white at the bottom to fold over as a shelf. 
• Glue or tape the short sides to the front of the stand.
• Tape the cups together and set them on in the window.
• Finally, write a fun message on the easel. Fold it in half to stand next to the hot cocoa bar.
• Now the real fun begins! Set the scene with your elf on the shelf and your favorite hot cocoa toppings for a sweet surprise!

Fun Tips for the Elf on the Shelf Hot Cocoa Bar

• Set up a kid-sized cocoa bar for breakfast, complete with a carafe of steaming hot cocoa!
• We all know the best part about hot cocoa is the toppings! Here are some fun options:
  • Cookie pieces
  • Marshmallow Fluff
  • Caramel drizzle
  • Crushed candy canes
  • Chocolate chips (peanut butter ones are great too!)
  • Cinnamon
  • Whipped cream
  • Sprinkles
  • Cayenne (just a pinch!)
• To help your elf get into character, you can add a small whipped cream mustache to his upper lip.
