If you have an animal lover in your home, they will love the animals on this list. My kids all crowded around the computer when I told them that Quokkas would be featured in this post. It seems like all of the time they spend on their phones has finally paid off because they’ve all seen #QuokkaSelfies and wanted to learn more about the smiling animal!

As my kids have gotten older, it has been hard finding conversation topics that everyone finds interesting. Animals always seem to be a winner, though. It reminds me of when my teens were young. They begged me to tell them stories about farm animals from their favorite songs. Now, they join in the fun by sharing interesting facts they’ve learned on their own.

I love that animals continue to make learning fun for my kids. The facts in this post have made some great dinner discussions at my house. You know they’re good when teens linger at the table once they’ve cleared their plates!

Quail

Quails are ground-dwelling birds that only fly when they are in danger. They would much rather run around than fly. They even build nests in fields or other grassy areas! Because they dislike flying, most quails do not migrate south in the winter. They’ll stay put all year round. During the oldest parts of the year, quails will seek out other quails to huddle together for warmth. Then, when the weather warms up again, they part ways!

Quahog (Clam)

Did you know Quahogs can live to be over 100 years old? You can tell how old a clam is by counting the ridges on its shell. Like the rings in a tree, each ridge on the shell marks a year of growth! Quahogs move around using a foot that slinks out of their shell to push them along the sandy sea floor.

Quokka

Quokkas are known as the world’s happiest animals due to their friendly personalities and smiling faces. These Australian marsupials are closely related to kangaroos and wallabies. If you are ever in Australia and want to see a quokka in the wild, you’ll want to head to Rottnest Island or Bald Island, where the only remaining wild quokkas are found.

Queen Snake

This royal snake easily blends into muddy waters with its brown skin. That’s because the queen is a big fan of crayfish! In fact, queen snakes are an essential member of the ecosystem because they keep the crayfish population in balance. Queen snakes are also great pets because they rarely bite and are non-aggressive.
