One of the absolute biggest and most common parenting problems you ever hear is around sleeping. It can be incredibly frustrating when your baby is not getting to sleep and you don’t know why, and it’s something that can easily drive you insane if you are not careful. The truth, however, is that there are generally one of a few reasons why your baby might not be sleeping, and as long as you go through these methodically one by one, you should soon enough be able to get the bottom of why your child isn’t sleeping. In this article, we are going to look at what those are, and see what you might be able to do about them in order to get more sleep for your baby – and therefore also more sleep for yourself.
When was the last time you actually checked out the crib to make sure that it is perfect? The truth is that many parents overlook this absolute essential, but it is often the number one reason that the baby doesn’t get to sleep easily. It needs to be adjustable, comfortable, and in a good position so that it does not get any drafts nor too much heat. As long as you are providing your baby with a comfortable and appropriate bed, you will find they get to sleep much more often and much more easily than they would otherwise. This is always the first thing to check when your baby is struggling to sleep, and also something you should keep a close eye on further into the future as well, on as regular a basis as possible.
If there is any noise in the house, it can easily mean that your baby won’t sleep as well as you would hope. You might be surprised at how small the sound can be and still affect your child, so it’s a good idea to aim for absolute silence at least while you are trying to get your baby off to sleep at first. Even a slight sound can be enough to disturb them, so it’s worth making sure that you are not doing anything to make that any more likely. If you find that you live in a noisy neighborhood, or the noise is in some other way beyond your control, then it might be a good idea to try and soundproof their room somehow.
Another main thing to look at which people overlook too often is the feeding plan. When you last feed your baby has an enormous impact on whether they will sleep and how likely it is that they will sleep, so it’s a good idea to make sure that you are paying close attention to this as well. If you get the feeding right, you will very often get the sleeping right, so this is worth thinking about if your baby is routinely struggling with getting off to sleep. Take a look at their feeding plan and try to amend it in whatever way you might think is possible.
