How Swim Lessons Save Your Marriage
My husband’s family have always been huge boating people. Ty remembers as he was growing up they would go boating most Saturdays after the yard work was done. All 9 of them, yes, mom, dad, and 7 kids would load up in the car and go down to the lake to go boating!
On one Saturday the kids were especially excited about going boating. As they arrived at the boat slip they jumped out of the car and ran off without their life jackets (which was a big no-no in the family). Ty’s mom was occupied taking care of the littles while his dad was gathering a few things out of the car when all of a sudden his mom had a really bad feeling. She quickly did a head count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6… where was #7? She realized that Trent was missing. She put everyone on high alert to find Trent. Travis (the oldest child) was already at the end of the dock so he started looking in between every boat slip while Ty’s dad started on the other end.
Travis then spotted Trent several feet under the water submerged floating. Travis jumped in and grabbed him. Once he was out of the water his dad instinctively grabbed his ankles and started shaking him. This forced a lot of water out of his lungs and he started breathing again.
After he had come around and recovered a bit, Ty’s mom asked Trent, “Were you scared?” Trent responded, “I wasn’t scared because I couldn’t see any sharks.”
Sadly, more than 40 people die by drowning every hour each day. Drowning is the 2nd leading cause of injury type deaths in children ages 1-14. Most of these are purely accidental. So often we hear stories of moms and dads that just ran to throw a diaper away while their kids were taking a bath, or that the kids turned the water on upstairs and didn’t even know it, or fell in a bucket and lost their lives to drowning. These misfortunes cause turmoil not only for the immediate future but for the rest of the family’s life. Sadly many families who experience a traumatic death of a child such as drowning it causes so much stress to a marriage that it ends in divorce.
One of the ways you can support your marriage is to make sure to equip your kids with the skills they need at a young age to be safe around the water.
Get Swim Lessons Early
In our home, we do this by enrolling our kids in swim lessons at Aqua-Tots starting at a young age. At Aqua-Tots swim lessons begin as early as 4 months with Parent and Tot classes where they begin learning life-saving skills. In the Level 1 class kids begin to learn proper boundaries, natural breathing techniques in the water as well as how to find air on their back and the side of the pool if they find themselves in the water. From there, kids begin to build upon these skills to continue to be safe in and around the water.
Always supervise your kids
Sometimes it is so easy to think, “I’m just going to run grab something, they will be fine…” but within those few seconds, it could be too late.
Being over prepared is better than being underprepared, so be sure to learn CPR so that if you ever find your child drowning you have the skills to try and save their life while you wait for help to arrive

Always Have Your Phone Around Water
I know this might sound like a distraction, but it is important to always have your phone when you around water. No this is not to play our favorite game or look at your Instagram feed, but it’s so you can quickly call for help if it is ever needed.
By doing these simple things it can help save your kids from drowning which will help protect your marriage from suffering a tragedy.
