Bring snacks! Let’s be honest, kids love to eat, even if they just ate!
Having snacks on hand is a must! I mean kids see shelves and shelves of food and naturally, they are now soooooo hungry! So keeping snacks in your purse or diaper bag will save you from buying food you don’t really need just to keep them from telling you they are hungry every 5 seconds.
Sometimes kids don’t want the snack you have because they always have it. So another trick is to have a special snack that they only get to eat in the store. Maybe they can only eat fruit snacks or granola bars while grocery shopping. By doing this your kids will actually be excited about shopping because they get a special snack!
If you forget a snack, a lot of the bigger store give free cookies at the bakery so stop by and see if they do! My kids know that as soon as we finish in the produce section we head to the bakery for our free cookie and they munch on that for the next several hours!
I am going to let you in on a secret, I have special toys in my purse that only come out when necessary, and at the grocery store it is totally necessary. My kids love to play with these toys because they only get them every once in a while. To them, it is like Christmas morning! It is a win-win for everyone!
If your kid likes to play dress-up they could have a special outfit that they get to wear only at the store. Or bring a purse specifically for your daughter that has play makeup, a wallet with fake money, and a play phone. Anything that your child doesn’t get to play with on a regular basis will keep them entertained at the store because it’s like playing with a new toy all over again!

Put Food in the Cart
Toddlers LOVE to help. Since they are so willing (most of the time) to help, let them help! Tell them what you need and have them put it in the cart. They will LOVE that they are a “big kid” and gets to help put things in the cart.
If your kid is too small to put things in the cart you could have them sit in the basket and organize things in the cart. Bring reusable bags that they can put the things in and out of over and over again. Kids LOVE putting and pulling things out of bags over and over again! It’s kind of funny, but it’s true! By bringing a couple of reusable bags and having them be in charge of what is in the cart is a great way to keep your kid occupied for a good amount of time.

Whether it’s an actual book, a quiet book or a coloring book, all of these are sure to give you at least a couple minutes of peaceful shopping!

Help With the Produce
Again, kids LOVE to help! If your kids are old enough to reach the scale have them weigh the produce. Even if you don’t need something weighed you could have them weigh it anyway just to give them something to do.
If your kids are not old enough to help weight the produce have them help put the produce in the bags. This helps them feel needed and entertained.
If your kid has a favorite toy or stuffed animal let them bring it to the store. My daughter LOVES her teddy bear and sometimes she likes to bring him to the store. When she does I try to include her teddy bear in the shopping adventures too.
I put him in the seat next to her and ask her if teddy bear wants to help put the fruit in the bag. It keeps her feeling safe and comfortable having her favorite toy with her and it keeps her busy by trying to include her bear in all the shopping adventures.
